A Week of Gratitude!
It started with my day 11 Grateful video. There is so much for us to be thankful for living in Canada. Our quality of life is superb. BAV and the Wharton School did a global survey and for the 5th straight year in a row Canada is rated the top country for quality of life. My maple leaf heart glows!
Later in the day I was inspired by my friend and web designer, Scott Demeules. What an honourable young man. He is creative, wise, generous and hard working. I get so excited to see young entrepreneurs passionate about making a difference. I am so grateful to learn from Scott and that he has brought me out of the stone-age of web-design and social media.
As the week progressed, I was blessed with a visit with our youngest son Andrew, who is now 29. I have to say enjoying time with adult children brings our relationship to another dimension. He’s pretty busy so I cherish when we have one of these spontaneous visits. I’m so proud of his decision to attend culinary school to gain training and a full understanding of food and beverage’s back of the house. He has just shy of three major sommelier designations, (Court of Masters, WSET 3, and almost completed CAPS) plus has his designations as Italian Wine Scholar and Spanish Wine Scholar. He is exceptionally talented. His hopes are to start some type of entrepreneurial venture with food and wine. He’s fermenting ideas. Our conversation was exciting as he shared his program, hopes and distant dreams.
Remembrance Day seems to have shifted for many to be a day of Gratitude. It is so wonderful to see people not only honour those who have given their service and lives to the military, but to appreciate freedom and democracy. It seems since COVID, appreciation of freedom and our lifestyles has resonated with many. I have also been struck that spouses and children of military families are being recognized for their service. It isn’t easy supporting someone who is taken on the grueling job of a soldier. Deployments, relocations, injuries, single parenting and post-traumatic stress are just a few of the many issues that confront military families.
By the end of the week Mark and I were blessed with visiting our grand-dog Torsha and Matt, our eldest son who is 31. We are so proud of Matt and his tenacious commitment to living the principles of a 12-step program. As a manager in hospitality, he goes above and beyond for his customers and staff. He loves the business and is good at it, as proven by the compliments we hear from staff when we visit. We have questioned him on a number of occasions, whether the demands and stress of this business are worth it. He repeatedly responds, “I love the business. I’m a hotel geek and love the challenges. Even when there is a fork in the road and I might have an option to make a different choice, my higher power delivers opportunities in the hotel business. Right now, it’s where I am meant to be.”
Thank you, Matt, for reinforcing to me the importance of choosing to listen and accept opportunities and embrace challenges presented by our higher power. We can choose to keep our eyes and ears wide open, so that we make connections and see opportunities, even those that might be mystically and mysteriously hiding behind a shadow.
