Have you ever wondered if you should try to look up a former teacher (note I didn’t say old lol) and tell them how they positively influenced your life?…it happened to me yesterday…

Yesterday, I was bestowed one of the most precious gifts as a teacher! I humbly share this sacred moment to encourage others to do the same. As I mentioned yesterday, reach out and touch someone virtually, well, why not make it a teacher from the past. As teachers we enter the profession to make a difference in the world and serve others in supporting and celebrating the power of learning and transformation. We do it from a place of love often sacrificing personal time, our pay check and prioritizing our students before our own families (there were times my boys used to ask, how come your class gets cookies or treats, don’t we?) To hear years later that one had a positive impact is so affirming and above all a gift to the heart and soul.

A former student Sami contacted me through Facebook. She told me that I was her favourite teacher and an influence for much of her life! She told me that the assemblies that Leslie Bell, my social skills teaching partner and I, ran dressed up as Captain Hook and Tinker Bell, were one of her favourite memories. As I read her text I was brought to tears and filled with joy! I remembered her as a very joyful, adorable, articulate, curious little princess who loved language and drama. If memory serves me right she was also very good at drawing.

So, an hour and twenty minute phone call later, Sami in Hamilton and me across the country in Victoria we reconnected. I heard how with great strength and tenacity, she furthered her education, battled adversity like a super hero and has set goals for her next set of dreams on her fascinating journey of life. I am so thrilled for her! She has grown into a formidable, kind, forgiving, humble young woman who will continue to influence and serve others. We exchanged photos and laughter.

Thank you Sami for connecting! Please stay in touch.
