Grandpoobee & Nanabanana Return
This story was written around 25 years ago after In Search of Something Green. Grandparents have a special way of providing venues and family experiences that bring us magic, inspiration and the all appreciated parenting love and support. In addition, watching the repartee between the aging seniors of a family after years of marriage is endearing and inspiring. This story Sassy Frass evolved from the inspiration provided by Frank and Olga. It must be noted my father did in fact have a love –dislike relationship with the squirrels as they often wreaked havoc around the chalet.
Today as we all go into social isolation as soldiers of peace and patience to fight the ghost enemy of COVID-19 which threatens to kill our aging boomer community (great-grandparents, grandparents and parents) and all others who suffer from compromised immune systems and chronic illnesses, my hope is this story will trigger smiles and fond memories of these important people in our communities.
These photos were taken during our social isolation walk around the very quiet resort. Rather spooky given that typically every day is filled with activity from homeowners, hotel guests and golfers.
Points of discussion with your kids:
- Chat about fond and funny memories of the senior people in your family tribe. Maybe consider writing this story with your children with a bit of a new twist or combine several memories on the same theme into one big story about that special senior(s).
- What are the characteristics your kids admire most in the seniors in your family tribe?
- What accomplishments do you admire most from these senior people and how have they influenced your life?
Rhymes in the story so you can chime in:
Grandpoobee says:
Sassy Frass Sassy Frass, Sassy Frass Squirrel!
What am I going to do with Sassy the Squirrel?
Nanabanana says:
Sassy Frassy scamper and flee
Quickly swiftly to your home in the tree!
…..at the end
Sassy Frassy scamper and run
Quickly swiftly come play and have fun!
Dazzle’s Challenge:
- Grab a piece of paper and illustrate the whole story of Sassy Frass or your favourite part.
- Do out into nature and record interesting sounds and pictures then bring them back home and make an iMovie of the experience or write your own story about the experience.
- Try some of these activities and games.
