Servant Leadership

…It’s Not About You & ME, It’s About US

For the past week I have been thoroughly enjoying the 10-day on line Servant Leadership Summit.

For years now I have been a proponent of servant leadership, hence, this opportunity is a fantastic thought provoking opportunity.

Today I heard Ken Blanchard (great leadership writer and guru…one of his many authored books The One Minute Manager) states servant leadership is, “Love in Action….loving your people is just recognizing that God didn’t make any junk, that people are beautiful and that one of your jobs as leader is how do you bring out the best.”

Adding to this, Jim Kouzes, a huge champion of encouraging the heart, (co-author of The Leadership Challenge) relates a story in his on-line presentation a story where he interviewed a military leader, Major General John Stanford. He asked, ” How would you develop leaders for the future?” His response was, “Whenever people ask me this question I say to them I have the answer to the secret to success in life. The secret to success is to stay in love.” This Major goes on to say that it’s the passion and exhilaration of being in love that keeps motivation and keep the spirit going. Jim was shocked to hear this from a Major General. As Jim states in the Leadership Challenge is essential for us all to stay committed to ‘love, devotion and service’ to all the people in our lives.

So it is on this note of love and service, delivered upon the backdrop of humanity’s biggest global uniting battle in history, that I share this story of Peace and Love that I wrote back in 2007, Citizenship….Love and Surrender. Now as some of you also know, my husband, Mark, my Elf King and chauffeur when out as Dazzle, has been working at developing his artistic skills (I’m Not An Artist) . I asked ( no pleaded lol with him to illustrate this story with his very endearing stick figure sketches). So sit back and enjoy the video reading of Citizenship…Love and Surrender.

Interesting, if you remember earlier in the week I was struck by waves of what I think was anxiety. I shared this with a friend who calmed me with a paraphrased memory of a piece he once read which he paraphrased, “There is in waves a moment where horizons disappear and only the sky, the water envelopes us …from thee we can lose our way unless we rest, until we can rise upon the crest again. We may drown if we let fear hold us within its grip shaking us, leaving us torn and disorientated…if we rest in silence, keep our energy and focus strong then time alone will bring us to another place where we can see the horizon again, see land again, regain our sense of where we need to be.” Sigh, wise and comforting words!

Dazzle’s Challenge:

  • Take a hot bath, turn on the tunes and maybe grab a book and read. Or give one minute of meditating a try. Truly try to relax in a perfect moment of nothingness.
