Mouthy Mia Meets the Wall of Honesty

Honesty…oh good old honesty….veracity….reliability….facts. It is a word that is constantly challenged in our world with phrases and words such as gossip, fake news, lack of transparency. In days of old things were simple, black and white, and guidelines were rarely challenged. In today’s pluralistic global world different perceptions filter morality and the definition of honesty.

When I think of our students and kids, I can’t help but think they are growing up in such a complex world. The skill of discernment needs to be balanced with compassion and empathy for another’s point of view and history. Where does this sophisticated decision-making and modelling take place? It takes place in our homes through our rules, expectations, and how we choose to model behaviour in front of our children.

This story attempts to address the issues that our kids have to come to terms with such as the ‘white lie’, non-disclosure and stubborn preoccupation to personal agenda. My hope is that it might ignite discussions about honesty with our kids. Again with many of my stories they are vocabulary rich for purposes of stretching our children’s comprehension levels and supporting vocabulary development.
