A friend asked yesterday, “Are you happy you reengaged in social media?”

Yes.

As most of you know, when Facebook came out I registered then stopped, leaving it for years. I felt it was a distractor of time, had potential to invade privacy and seemed to be fostering the compare, compete, and idle chatter. If I needed to keep in touch with friends there was email and texting.

Retirement March 2016 and by the fall of 2017 after self publishing In Search of Something Green it was recommended that I get reengaged with social media. So in the interest of promoting my writing, filled with trepidation, I waded in slowly. In addition, I refreshed my website and struggled to get blogging.

Speed dial to April 2020, how has it been? Great! I am grateful for the experience.

Ways it has enriched my life:

  • After doing a rip and refresh in moving out west to Vancouver Island (Canada’s Hawaii), it has connected me with friends and family globally beyond my immediate circle.
  • Offered interesting feeds of articles, inspiration and entertainment.
  • Made it easier to seek out people and events.
  • Expanded my technology skills as I have again learned more from Scott my web designer who has designed my website again and introduced me to Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
  • Chronicles my thoughts and life events that I choose to share on my posts.
  • Gives me a way to show case my writing.
  • Allows me to help others with suggestions through reflections and the sharing of resourceful links.
  • Offers more tools to be creative.

Disadvatages:

  • At times, it can seem trite or superficial.
  • Overwhelming with information that feeds my ADHD side of skim reading and scanning without patience to detail.
  • Bots looking to hack your life and creeps who are trying to lure by trying to make connections (Ugh).

And what about privacy? Well other than the occasional waves of bots and creeps, it’s as private as I choose to make it with what I choose to post and how I mange my privacy settings ( which have improved since Facebook’s inception).

Dazzle’s Challenge:

  • Why not learn something new about the social platforms you are using or introduce a new platform. I’m going to try and expand my Instagram skills. Inch by inch!
