Are you a Millennial upset with your parents and/or grandparents defiance in the face of COVID? Are you a Boomer and tired of being badgered by your kids and young family members to stay home? Role reversal?
Yesterday Mark and I decided to take a Costco Adventure, during the early morning senior hour. It was the first time in two and a half months going to the monolith of retailers and boy did we get an earful from our son, “STAY AT HOME! What do I keep telling you guys!” SIGH…
I am so grateful our kids are in constant contact with us, whether it be daily or several times a week. We really appreciate their concern and suggestions BUT we are being social responsible, trust us. For the last six weeks Mark and I have ordered curb side groceries, ordered from a local meal prep service (Local Urban), only made a very quick in/out visit for perishables at quiet grocery stores, ordered other items on line, use disinfectant when bringing items into our unit, wash our hands when coming in from the outside, social distance when we walk or see friends outside, after three weeks ordered take out from our local restaurant (to support our local business) AND we rarely use the elevator, using the stairs to our eighth floor condo once a day when we go for our walk. Trust us we are doing what we can to be responsible citizens and stay healthy. Remember we worry about you too!
This is such a profound time where we are communicating with friends and family members on increased intimacy levels. What a grace filled period in our relationship development! In a couple of articles listed below it is noted that the authors are reflecting that parent child communication is deeper than ever.
So from a Boomer perspective, the sea of life, consumerism, travel and experiential learning, has hypnotized us, and as such, this pandemic maelstrom, has arrested our attention like nothing else we have experienced in our lifetime. Shocking? Yes! It is requiring us to communicate, as Covey states, “Seeking to understand,” cross generationally. It is a time when many of us Boomers will need to reassess our habits and ways of seeking adventure and fulfillment. To a certain degree many of us will choose not to take as many risks BUT we are a generation of optimistic creative doers and adventurers (some would say a touch ODD … Oppositional Defiant Disorder .. lol). In the face of
Gasps, confusion, yet, an arresting state of awe prevails
The excitement, the intensity, fighting urgency swells
We will get through this pandemic… keeping in perspective that storms do stop.
Is this what sailors sing in adventurous stormy sea tales?
Here is a poem penned that I referenced in this blog:
Dazzle’s Challenge:
- Parents and children maybe write a short poem to express your feelings for each other. Sometimes a short poem can say more than an awkward conversation.
