Battling Fear & Anxiety With Understanding Neuroscience
As mentioned at the outset of this journey of social isolation and COVID-19, I experienced my first mild anxiety attack in 61 years. Since I have had a couple of slight waves but overall I have been trying to implement exercises as outlined in Rewire Your Anxious Brain by Catherine M. Pittman and Elizabeth M. Karle. An exceptional read. It clearly and concisely explains the anatomy of the anxious journey, helping one identify the exact root cause (the cortex or amygdala) and providing appropriate activities that are tailored to the different sources. A one size does not fit all. Also these authors emphasize the message that our brains are malleable and can regenerate or grow new pathways. They also provide a number of links so that you can get downloadable worksheets. I noted they also have a book specifically addressed to teens.
Dazzle’s Challenge:
- Sit with your family and go through photos, share memories and create a photo book with text descriptors. There are many photo book apps also Costco offers a photo book service.
