When are we the happiest? Is it when we are playing and having fun? Is it when we are creating? Is it when we have influence? Is it when we are sharing?

Pondering these questions I can’t help but thinking about times that many teachers and families with children anticipate and embrace with great joy, Christmas. In particular, many parents and teachers go out of their way to incorporate the Elf on the Shelf. They enjoy coming up with creative vignettes, messages, challenges and stories, nightly, then with bubbling anticipation wait for the morning when their children find this whimsical creature. Why not create or introduce you own character that will start your days with inspiration and fun?

How? Here are a few ideas:

–       First, the character can be made from craft items, nature finds or by using existing toys, lego or stuffies (think Toy Story and how the toys come alive) see links below.

–       Come up with the character on your own and surprise the kids in the morning. Have your character present a note introducing themselves and their mission. The mission is that the character is to be the personal learning guide and provocateur to the family.

–       Discuss with your children if a magical creature could help them learn what would it be? What would it look like? Could you make one together and maybe it will come alive or leave you messages, treats and challenges? Make the creature with your kids.

–       Take pictures throughout the day as the character helps you and your family go on the learning adventure. Keep these in a file that you can then use as a memento of your home schooling.

–       Have the children write notes to the character with reflections or questions the night before which in turn can be answered by the creature the next day.

Children love make-believe and magic, as do we adults when you think of the popularity of Disney and Halloween. Let’s play and be open to a child’s perspective!
