Have You Ever Had a Surprising Unsolicited Message That Became Creative Inspiration?

This is how Abbey’s Dental Jewel was birthed. Saturday 24, 2011, I received a random email at my fairy@….ca email address. The message stated the following:

Dear Tooth Fairy,

Samantha lost her tooth a few days ago, and it was a very special tooth, so she wanted to show it to her friends. She has decided to put it under her pillow. You are welcome to come and take it any time you like.

Thank you, I know you are very busy.

Best Regard,

Alex

I was taken aback at the synchronicity of the email and responded with the following:

Dear Samantha,

I am sure your friends were very excited to see your tooth. Baby teeth are so precious. I call them the pearls of awestruck wonder. We collect them and save them in a very special treasure box. They give off a sparkly magic which we recycle with older people who are sad and discouraged. We sprinkle this special awestruck energy and magic from these baby tooth ‘pearls’ over these sad, lonely, discouraged and ill older people to help them see the beauty in the world with the joy and wonder of a little person. So, know that your baby teeth are bringing older people happiness.

I hope you like your treat that I left.

I am sending you a showering of joy, white light and tickling fairy wishes

Poof! These email exchanges triggered some brainstorming on my part. I was teaching kindergarten at the time and began thinking of how to combine the Tooth Fairy story as I told Samantha in the email with the idea of an alliterative ABC story. The idea is that the alliterative lines would be tongue twisters to enhance phoneme development and awareness. In addition, I wanted to create a story that would offer more complex vocabulary with rhyming couplets to appeal to the later primary and early junior grades. Voila, the story of Abbey’s Dental Jewel was created! Thank you, Alex and Samantha (who is now 20 years old and in university) … you inspired this story!

There are times in our lives that magical mysterious messages are presented to be an inspiration, that is if we choose to take note and listen. Taking extra time to ponder these mystical notes can provoke creative musings that in turn can evolve into the basis of a new imaginative piece of writing. Are we stopping to fully absorb the nuances, subtleties, and awestruck wonder of each moment? Hmmmm…..
